Pierre de Fermat was an amateur mathematician because his main occupation was being a judge/lawyer. Math was his hobby when he returned home from a long day at work. Throughout his lifetime, Fermat did not win any awards for his contributions to mathematics but now there is an award named after Pierre de Fermat to honor his contributions known as The Fermat Prize.
